Unholy Postures-
Unholy Postures is a concept and fashion collection motivated by the wretched events surrounding the enslavement of Africans and their subsequent transportation through the Middle Passage to America. It seeks to divulge the abominable occurrences that took place during the voyage, as well as the repercussions that persist to this day for the descendants of those who were enslaved. The collection draws a sharp contrast between the opulence of Baroque-era fashion and the inhumanity that occurred during the same period. Baroque silhouettes are reimagined to reflect the psychological and physical constriction endured, while incorporating materials like cotton duck to reference "negro cloth" and using straps and binding to symbolize restriction. The forms are influenced by the postures of those forced into the Middle Passage, though they are not limited to the body alone. Sculptural elements play a central role and are true to Tanae's signature style, which emphasizes tension and discomfort. This garment is intended to provoke thought, challenge historical erasure, and create space for reflection. Through this work, Tanaé aims to reclaim narrative and bring visibility to a history often distorted or overlooked in mainstream fashion.
